Truckers: Proudly Moving America
Trucking For America
It is not enough to say that without truck drivers, America stops moving. America also stops eating in many areas of the country and stops working practically everywhere in the United States. About 70 percent of all raw goods, food, equipment, and product moves by truck. According to the Department of Transportation Statistics, the trucking industry employs over 8.7 million people and moves 9.2 billion tons of freight, valued at $671 billion, with over 5.6 million tractor trailers that are driven by more than 3.5 million men and women.
Safety is always a top priority
Whether they are owner-operators, work for a large trucking company, or drive for a national retailer, every truck driver has loved ones they care about and wish to keep safe and happy. Truckers not only rely on the vast highway system to earn a living, they daily do their part to deliver the goods on time, while keeping the highways safe for everyone. More than 80 percent of the accidents that involve commercial vehicles are the fault of the non-commercial driver.
Pay more than their share
Commercial trucks account for 12.5 percent of all the registered vehicles on the road, but pay over 36.5 percent ($37.4 billion in federal and state) of the highway-user taxes. Automobiles and light trucks are responsible for 63 percent of the fuel used in the United States. The trucking industry purchases about 12.8 percent of all fuel in the country. Tractor trailer drivers log a total of about 139.3 billion miles each year and generate total revenue of $255.5 billion. To operate those trucks on the roads, the trucking industry pays about $21.4 billion annually.
