History of Utility Trailers

Utility Trailers began in 1914 when H.C. Bennett and E.W. Bennett built a trailer to accommodate 60 bales of cotton. The trailer had a single axle. Then, Utility built cable reel trailers to be used by the United States government during World War I. The company later bought their trailers back from the government and sold them to other customers. In the 1920s, Utility was among the first of the manufacturers of trailers to use a all-riveted frame with duralumin metal. The company purchased a steel foundry in 1935, giving them the ability to produce steel casings to use and sell to other companies. Later, Utility became the first trailer manufacturer to have sales and service operations in every state in the western U.S.

Utility bought 40 acres of land in City of Industry, California in the 1950s. They located to the headquarters that is still used by the company today. They also built a manufacturing plant in Texas and one in Salt Lake City, Utah. In the 1960s the company developed a system of foam-in-place insulation to make their reefer trailers lighter and more efficient.

The company continues to grow and create more innovative ways to serve their customers better today. They began using LED as the standard lighting on all of their trailers in 2010. The company's 3000R trailer continues to be the top-selling refrigerated trailer and their 4000D-X composite is their fastest growing model. The company celebrated their 100th anniversary of serving customers in the trucking industry in 2014.
