By Simon Kennedy LONDON (MarketWatch) --

German car maker Daimler AG said Tuesday that its Daimler Trucks North America unit will close two plants, shed around 3,500 jobs and discontinue one of its brands in response to continued depressed demand across the industry. The group said it will stop making vehicles under the Sterling Trucks brand in March 2009. It added its St. Thomas, Ontario, plant will cease truck manufacturing at that time, and its Portland, Oregon, plant will also close in June 2010. Daimler said 2,300 workers at the plants will be affected by mid-2010, including 720 previously announced cuts, and the company also plans to reduce its salaried workforce by around 1,200 positions. The group said the plans will cost around $600 million and are expected to result in annual earnings improvements of $900 million by 2011.

With things like this happening it goes to show you that the trucking market needs changes and with that being said I’m predicting that we will see a large increase of used truck purchases over new. Because like Diamler, companies are trying to save money any way they can. And purchasing a slightly used truck over a new truck you save thousands on F.E.T. tax tire tax and other fees. Plus with a soft market the prices of used trucks have dropped dramatically.

For example. Myself Scott Farrell With Lake City Trucks was selling 2006 Pete 379’s 6 month’s ago for 69,000 and 70,000 now we are selling the same trucks for high 50k range. THE POINT. IF YOU CAN BUY, BUY USED AND BUY NOW! Thanks Scott Farrell Lake City Trucks.

Peterbilt Hybrid is changing The way Peterbilt Motors Company introduced its Medium Duty Hybrid Demonstration Tour recently in Napa Valley, California at its Hybrid Production Launch Press Conference and Ride and Drive. The Ride and Drive event allowed local government officials, media and customers the ability to test drive and learn first-hand about the newly available Peterbilt Model 330 and 335 Hybrid Electric vehicles.

The Peterbilt Medium Duty Hybrid Demonstration Tour is designed to provide existing and prospective customers in the United States and Canada the ability to test drive and evaluate the new 2009 Peterbilt Medium Duty Hybrid Models. Hybrid vehicles currently scheduled on tour are the Hybrid Electric Model 330 and Model 335 for applications such as utility, pickup and delivery and dump truck users.

With this kinda news that should give us all the more reason to be getting rid of those fuel hog’s and changing our ways. At Lake City Trucks I know all about that.when you drive 100k a year an extra mile a gallon can make a big difference. That is why I carry all used makes and models Freightliner, Peterbilt , Kenworth, International, and Mitsubishi. With over 150 trucks in stock. That way there is something for whatever you need. You can look at some of my trucks by going to Heavy Duty Trucks HQ or just give me a call here is my Cell 801-330-5126.

Using the Internet to Buy or Sell Heavy Trucks – Look to Mexico, Europe and Asia for Sales

The market for used heavy trucks has shifted to Mexico, Europe and Asia.  Russian companies are importing used heavy trucks at significant levels and are joined by countries in Asia such as South Korea and Vietnam as well as Mexico.  The Internet is the source of information for these potential purchasers of used heavy trucks.

The trucking industry is reeling from the effects of high diesel fuel costs and the reality is that many businesses are leaving the industry.  Well over a 1000 failed businesses is the likely number so far this year and the prospects are dim through the remainder of 2008. Small owner-operator businesses are the most hard hit and businesses with 5 or fewer trucks are not normally included in industry statistics. These small business are placing their used heavy trucks on the sales bloc.

The result is that there are many used heavy trucks on the market.  Those that have the financial ability are taking advantage of the opportunity to purchase used heavy trucks.  Those selling used heavy trucks are having a hard time as the glut forces price down.

Advertising used heavy trucks via print media, the long standing standard of the industry does not have the “reach” of Internet based advertising.  Detailed descriptions, photographs, and other salient information can often not be included, as there is limited space available.  Enter the Internet, where detailed descriptions, photographs, financing opportunities and a host of other salient information is at the fingertips of a potential purchaser ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD.

The market for used heavy trucks while dampened in the US, is flourishing overseas.  Europe and Asia are prime markets for used heavy trucks from the US.  The vehicle that was plying the highways of the United States a few months ago is now operating in Russia, throughout Europe and on the roads in a number of  Asian countries.  The devalued dollar is adding fuel to this growing used heavy truck market.   As many as 6-10,000 used heavy trucks were exported in 2007 and the numbers are expected to increase significantly in 2008.

See other story here.

Time to buy?  Trucks and Houses are available at a discount

The Commerce Department reported Tuesday that new home sales in the United States rose 3.3 percent in April after almost 6 months of decline. New home sales rose by by 41.7 percent in the Northeast last month while sales in the Midwest were up 5.8 percent and in the West sales gained 8.3 percent.  The South was the only region where sales dropped, reportedly by 2.4 percent.

The median price of a new home was down 4.2 percent to $246,000 from a year ago.  The median price represents the middle point where half sold for more and half sold for less.

USA Today reports the housing market for existing homes is ugly with prices expected to decline by as much as 14.2 percent.

This is a disaster for many and an opportunity for others that are seeking to make a purchase.

Lets move to the trucking industry.

The New York Times had an article that highlighted the plight of many truckers that are being forced to sell due to the high cost of fuel.  Reportedly, over 45,000 trucks have been taken out of service and over 900 trucking companies have been forced out of business.

However Knight Transportation just increased their quarterly dividend and their shares rose 98 cents, $18.15. Also, Old Dominion stock rose 33 cents to $28.39.

CH Robinson Worldwide Inc., Con-Way Inc. and JB Hunt Transport Services Inc., are also expected to have good financial returns in spite of market conditions.

So is the time right to take advantage of the many trucks that are on the market?  For those in the right position, the time could not be better.

2004 KENWORTH T600 Don't you just love that new truck smell? Me too, though, unfortunately, a new truck isn't in the budget right now. But the ole rig is starting to show its age so I'm in the market, as they say. I've been browsing the Trucker to Trucker website and have found some sweet deals on used trucks that are a nice step up from old Betsy.
