The American Trucking Associations is the first to join the U.S. Army Reserves new Employer Partnership program. The program aims to guarantee reservists a civilian job based on their military specialty. The program will provide all training, licensing and certifications necessary to help reservists make a successful transition back to civilian life.
The Employer Partnership program plans to bridge the gap between Army and commercial training and qualifications. The Army is in the process of modifying its truck driving school curriculum to meet FMCSA commercial license standards. Similarly, the Army will recognize civilian sector skills when an individual joins the Reserves.
"We're in the seventh year of the global war on terrorism, and employers are bearing the burden when their soldier-employee takes a leave of absence from the workplace to support the war in Iraq or Afghanistan," said Army Reserve chief Lt. Gen. Jack Stultz, designer of the jobs initiative. "We're offering employers who want to partner with us the chance to gain tangible benefits by hiring Army Reserve soldiers."
Seems to me this is a win-win program. Employers get highly trained employees and, more importantly, returning soldiers get a shot at a decent job. Since a lot of truck drivers are Vets themselves, makes me feel good to know we're looking after our own.
