Safe Driving Tips for the Holidays

Thanksgiving weekend is one of the busiest travel times of the year. More than 36 million motorists are expected to hit the road this weekend, all rushing to Grandma's house for turkey dinner. For truckers, sharing the road with a lot of turkey-filled, stressed-out four-wheelers can be a challenge. If we all use a little common sense and exercise a bit of extra courtesy, we can share the road and all get where we're going safely. Here are a few safe driving tips for the holidays. Feel free to pass them along to your four-wheeled friends.

  • Use extra caution. There will be a lot of people on the road this weekend and most of them won't be as experienced at driving as we truckers are. Give them some extra room and expect the unexpected.
  • Don't forget your pre-trip safety check. Check tires, wipers, gas, oil and fluid levels before you leave. Take your cell phone for emergencies.
  • Plan your trip and print out or write down a list of the directions in big print. You should know each exit name and number. Don't try to focus on a map or tiny print from a MapQuest printout while you're driving.
  • Take plenty of rest stops along the way. Stop occasionally to stretch your legs and get a bite to eat. Give your mind and body a chance to relax and recharge.
  • Take an emergency kit which should include: battery powered radio, extra batteries, flashlight, blanket, jumper cables, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, bottled water, non-perishable foods, maps, tire repair kit and flares. If traveling to cold areas, add sand or kitty litter for traction, a collapsible shovel for snow and an ice scraper for your windows.
  • Listen to the weather reports and watch for changes in weather, particularly in early morning and late evening when roads can ice up.
  • Leave early and allow plenty of driving time. Don't drive if you are tired, upset or ill.
  • Be aware of truck blind spots. If you can't see the truck driver in his mirrors, he can't see you.
  • Don't cut quickly in front of trucks. Trucks can take up to two football fields to come to a full stop.
  • Be patient and only pass when you're sure you have plenty of room.
  • Buckle up, slow down, drive defeinsively and enjoy your holiday.

See you on the flip side. It's time to toss my turkey in the deep fry! Happy Thanksgiving to all!
