In general, always use a healthy skepticism and your own good judgment. The following tips should also be used as a guideline:

Do Not Wire Transfer Money To Anyone You Do Not Know. Call 800-240-5811 with Questions! Scam Alerts Page

  1. If an item is listed significantly below the market value, take extra steps to verify the seller's claims.
  2. United States laws may not apply to the international buyers, so use extra caution when dealing with buyers from countries outside of the U.S.
  3. If you question the intentions of a seller, suggest using an escrow company. Generally a fraudulent seller will not agree to this service.
  4. Verify the authenticity of money orders, cashiers checks, and wire transfers. (There are many Wire Transfer Scams)
  5. Verify the seller's name, address, phone, and email.
  6. Credit cards are a preferred method of payment because they will allow you to dispute charges with your card provider if something goes wrong with the transaction.
  7. Request evidence of title, registration, and the vehicle identification number (VIN).
  8. Seek proof of possession by requesting information or photos that could only be supplied by someone in possession of the item.
