Dump Truck Varieties

Traditional Dump Truck

A traditional dump truck is attached to a frame. During operation, a hydraulic ram lifts the bed vertically. The truck also has a tailgate, which can be adjusted to swing.

Dump trucks that are driven in the United States have one steering axle, but one or two axles are located at the rear of the vehicle.

Truck and Pup Truck

A truck and pup truck and a transfer dump truck have similar features and functions. However, a pup trailer has a separate hydraulic ram that offers efficient unloading capabilities.

Super Dump Truck

A super dump truck has a load-bearing axle and a trailing axle. When the vehicle is empty, the hydraulic arms keep the back of the truck clear after the driver toggles the trailing axle up.

Transfer Dump Truck

A transfer dump truck has an individual trailer, which has a movable cargo container. The driver can fill the container with asphalt, wood chips, sand, gravel, or other materials. The second container is either powered by electric motors, a hydraulic line, or a pneumatic motor.

End Dump Truck

Next up we have the end dump truck which has tractor-trailer components, but the trailer has a hydraulic hoist. Usually, the truck contains a tri-axle tractor and hauls a semi-trailer that uses two axles. The ability to unload quickly is the biggest advantage to using a semi end dump truck.

Bottom Dump Truck

This dump truck has three axles on the tractor and transports a trailer with two axles. At the bottom of the trailer, there is a dump gate with clam shell design. Drivers use bottom dump trucks because they can transport sand and dirt in a linear heap.

Off-Highway Dump Trucks

An off-highway dump truck is used for heavy construction projects. During advanced mining projects and heavy hauling projects, construction companies use larger off-highway dump trucks.

Heavy Haul

Heavy Haul Dump trucks help construction workers transport big quarries and surface mines. These trucks have traditional steering functions and a rigid frame. Diesel-electric power trains are found on many of the biggest haul trucks. They use a diesel engine that powers a DC generator or an AC alternator.
